The Qualified Medication Aide Certification Program ensures that individuals meet the requirements for a Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) and are on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry. This program is administered by the Indiana State Department of Health, Division of Healthcare Education and Quality.

  • QMA TRAINING CLASSES 6 weeks *START DATES Feb 20TH, April 2nd 2024 10:am -2:PM WEDNESDAY ONLY

  • QMA Insulin *START DATES Jan 26th, Feb 9th, March 23rd 2024 8:am – 4:30PM

  • 1,000 HRs AS A CNA (within 24 Months)

To be certified as a QMA an individual has to complete additional training and demonstrated competency while dispensing and passing medication.   In addition, a QMA must obtain six (6) hours of medication-related in-service education each year.  A QMA works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse and can perform only procedures that are defined within the QMA scope of practice.

How to qualify for a QMA (Qualified Medication Aide) class

The QMA training program consists of at least 100 hours of training to include 60 hours of classroom instructions and 40 hours of supervised practicum. 

An individual must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have proof of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be in good standing as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) on the Indiana Aide Registry
  • Worked a minimum of 1,000 hours as a CNA within the last 24 months
  • Complete the 100-hour QMA Training Program
  • Pass a QMA written competency evaluation

Student nurse must:

  • Be currently enrolled in a nursing program
  • Have completed pharmacology or equivalent course
  • Must complete the 40 hours of supervised medication practicum
    (Note: student nurse are exempt from the 60 hours of a classroom)
  • Pass the QMA written competency evaluation
